Postmodernism Key Words part 5


The canon – Unchangeable (conservative) traditional, not subject to review, set of laws, norms and rules in various and different spheres of human life and activities. Postmodern art rejects and refuses the canons and attempts to create them. 

Multiculturalism –  Is a strategy for building a social place for a new intercultural (consists of different cultures) and non-contentious community – postmodern “supersociety”. Multiculturalism is reconsidering the cultural canon.

Postcolomialism – Process of rethinking the colonial ”past” . Analyzes the cultural heritage of colonialism in different spheres.

DWEM's – „From antiquity to our time, almost every brick laid in the foundation of the building, which represents modern culture, is a white man, who in most cases has already died, and who earned his immortality with his achievements. Some white men formed their history with accomplishments and conquests, other white men documented and glorified their exploits, while still others perceived both as a role model and continued their work.”

Feminism – Tendency for equality of women with men in all spheres of society.

Phallocentrism – The term of Jacques Lacan's psychoanalysis, this means a patriarchal symbolic order in which the phallus is positioned as a sign of privileged masculinity. In feminist works it is used as a more rigid synonym for androcentrism.

Eurocentrism – Scientific tendency and political ideology, that proclaims the superiority of European peoples and Western European civilization over other peoples and civilizations in the cultural sphere, the superiority of European peoples lifestyle, and their special role in world history.
