"What
I like best is to have fun with the structure." These are the words of
famous director Quentin Tarantino about making films. After all, the first
thing that comes to mind about his revolutionary film "Pulp Fiction" is
not just genius dialogues but also a tricky dramatic structure. This film is a
mosaic or a puzzle, where several films with intersecting plots, heroes and
motives gather together. The violation of the chronological order of the action
has different tasks: on the one hand, it reveals the author's intention, and on
the other hand it helps to involve the viewer in a unique game of unravelling
history.
In total, there
are six parts in this film, but only three of them have titles: "Vincent
Vega and Marsellus Wallace's Wife", "The Gold Watch" and "The
Bonnie Situation".
The order
of stories in the film:
- · Robbery (the beginning)
- · Vincent and Jules
- · "Vincent Vega and the wife of Marcellus Wallace"
- · "The Golden Clock"
- · "The situation with Bonnie"
- · Robbery (ending)
Chronological
order:
- · Vincent and Jules
- · "The situation with Bonnie"
- · Robbery (both parts)
- · "Vincent Vega and the wife of Marcellus Wallace"
- · "The Golden Clock"
In
"Pulp Fiction" there is no beginning and no end. This film is looped
(in the form of a circle): it ends with what it begins with - the scene of cafe
robbery. But this is not an ordinary ring composition. In the beginning of the
film, viewers see the Second Act of history instead of The Setup, which,
according to the story, has not even begun yet. Characters that have been
killed in one of the fragments of the film, may appear in another after a while. Stories that make up the film
are layered on each other and continue even after they have ended. Everything
in "Pulp Fiction" is so mixed up that it keeps the viewer on the edge
of their seat from the beginning to the end.
Whole big plot of "Pulp Fiction"
combines three storylines (stories). The first storyline ("The Bonnie
Situation"): The Story of Vincent and Jules, two colleagues performing the
mission of their boss Marcellus Wallace. These two should bring their boss a suitcase
with content that remains unknown to the viewer throughout the whole film.
Second storyline
("Vincent Vega and Marsellus Wallace's Wife"):The story of Vincent
and Marcellus’ wife Mia. Marsellus asked his accomplice to entertain during his
departure, Vincent has to take Mia anywhere, so that she would not be bored.
